Chicago was founded in 1833, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. The city became a major transportation and telecommunications hub in America. In the 1720s, the French built the Fort of Chécagou, under the leadership of Pierre de Liette, from which the present day Chicago city, probably takes its name.
